Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate-Led Consortium Approved to Negotiate with George Mason University to Develop the Arlington Campus Expansion

Mason Innovation Partners, a consortium led by Edgemoor as developer and investor, was selected by George Mason University (Mason) to begin negotiations on a P3 to design, build, finance, lease, and operate the new digital innovation headquarters on Mason's Arlington, Virginia campus.

This project will transform Mason’s Arlington campus into a dynamic and collaborative high-tech environment. The expanded campus will serve as the catalyst for implementing Mason’s goal of attracting world-class talent and industry partners, along with sparking the Rosslyn-Ballston Corridor through impactful innovation.

The Mason Innovation Partners team shares Mason’s vision of the new headquarters as a unique convening space for students and faculty, commercial tenants, innovators, entrepreneurs and the greater Arlington community. The building will include up to 360,500 square feet of new space to foster a cutting-edge ecosystem offering university R&D labs, classrooms, and offices, corporate innovation centers, incubators/accelerators and co-working facilities, collaboration and convening spaces, and retail.

Mason’s new digital innovation headquarters will incorporate state-of-the-art smart and green building technologies, as well as advanced cyberinfrastructure. The building and its surrounding site will set a model for sustainability and wellness.

A hallmark of Edgemoor’s approach to teaming on large projects is economic inclusion: growing the local workforce and creating opportunities for all. Additional team members, including those yet to be determined, would include a wide range of small, women, and minority-owned firms (SWaM) firms with a goal of maximizing opportunities for local and historically disadvantaged businesses and helping them build capacity to deliver future projects in the community. Edgemoor would ensure that these firms are included on the project team at all phases of the project from design through projects operations.

“We are proud to continue our relationship with Mason to deliver our second project for the university. The Arlington campus will be a beacon of innovation for Mason and the entire Metropolitan Washington region, and Edgemoor is excited to play a role in helping Mason meet its goal of delivering a world-class facility. This building has already attracted interest from potential tech tenants due to the location, proximity to Mason’s faculty and students, high-tech talent that will be co-located in the building, and one-of-a-kind collaboration space,” said Edgemoor Senior Managing Director Geoffrey Stricker.

The development consortium includes developer and investor Edgemoor, headquartered in Bethesda, MD, along with Harrison Street as a capital partner, Clark Construction Group as general contractor, EYP as lead architect, OTJ Architects as the office interior architect, Newmark as the commercial leasing partner, and Dewberry as the site/civil engineer.
